The Word is a transformative literary arts program powered by an intergenerational cooperative of diverse, justice-minded spoken word artists. The Word builds community by growing radically inclusive writing and performance programs grounded in poetry, rap, and song. Through its many partnerships, The Word brings a creative life force into social action groups, movements, and institutions – expanding our collective capacity to re-imagine ourselves and our world.
LIT CYPHER
In May, The Word celebrated the end of the school year by hosting a lit cypher and open mic, free to the public at neighborhood music school! The event highlighted two featured student performers and Balanc3, a performer and Teaching Artist for The Word.
CT YOUTH SLAM
At the 2024 CT Youth Slam, over 20 youth poets showcased their incredible talent for a chance to win cash prizes and represent CT at Brave New Voices in DC. The event drew a vibrant crowd, celebrating the power of youth voices and the artistry of spoken word. It was a night filled with passion, creativity, and inspiration, as these talented poets captivated everyone in attendance. Details for the 2025 Youth Slam are soon to come!!
BRAVE NEW VOICES
The Youth Slam winners traveled to Brave New Voices in July 2023! This international poetry competition took place in San Francisco California! It is at a different location every year. The students practiced hard to prepare for the competition and did AMAZINGLY!During the three days with Brave New Voices the students networked with peers from throughout the world, joined workshops with renowned poets, artists and speakers and participated in other events.
The students and their chaperones were also able to explore the city while they were there before the competition! They ventured out to The Black Panther museum, saw the Golden Gate Bridge, enjoyed local cuisine, and exploring!
